Set in 1839, Talledega, Alabama and 1939, Hamburg, Germany-Home on the Mornin’ Train is driven by a book about the Underground Railroad woven throughout the play, which guides a group of young Jewish children of hope to escape to freedom. The story delivers a message of courage and the evidence that those who long for freedom travel the same road. A story so eloquently displayed in the riveting talents of these outstanding actors, the story is also captured in powerful song and dance. Directed by New York native Crystal Little with original choreography by resident choreographer LaTanya Johnson and Music direction by Lance Hamright. Porch Productions performance of the play written by Kim Hines opens the pages of turbulent times while illustrating hope, survival and inspiration. This all-youth production unfolds as two separate dramas on one stage — with lasting impressions for the audience.
Porch Productions will hold a special school show on Friday March 8th 2013 at 11:00am. The school show performance is designed to engage young audience members (grades 3-12) in understanding fictional and non-fictional characters, history and themes. Students will learn of geography mapping and plotting points by references of the big dipper pointing to the North star as a way for slaves to escape to freedom; music interpretation that evokes memories; themes of courage and heroism and understanding history though small personal stories. The school show performance will end with a special cast meet and greet in the lobby. Teachers are encouraged to review and discuss the teacher resource guide that is available for download on the Porch Productions website [www.porchproductionsinc.com]. The guide is a fantastic way for teachers to introduce and discuss the themes that will be present in the production. The guide includes curriculum based activities designed for grades 3-12.
