Shakespeare Carolina will premiere Queen Margaret, a new adaptation from the History Plays of William Shakespeare on Thursday April 18. Adapted by director Tony Wright, Queen Margaret tells the story of a young princess who must evolve into a warrior queen to protect her dynasty during a time of civil conflict in England known as the Wars of the Roses.
Queen Margaret begins when our title character is a teenaged French princess. She is married by proxy and brought to Medieval England to meet her new husband, the King, sight unseen. Alas, King Henry is a meek and gentle soul, unable to stand up to the ruthless and powerful Dukes and Earls who wield the true power of the kingdom. And Henry’s claim to the throne is weak. His grandfather had taken the crown by force, and a living relative (the Duke of York, leader of the White Rose faction) has a stronger claim to the throne. This conflict eventually becomes the English civil war known to history as the Wars of the Roses. With Henry unable to lead the Red Rose side to victory, and protect the crown for her son, Margaret must become a warrior queen and lead the armies herself.
Queen Margaret, a new play by William Shakespeare, is adapted and directed by Tony Wright. In Charlotte, Tony was the Producer of Classic’s Theater and The Actor’s Gym and in Atlanta he was the Associate Artistic Director of The Shakespeare Tavern. He has directed 20 Shakespeare productions in the last twenty years and has had the honor of performing at The Globe in London. The title character will be played by Katie Bearden, who has played Antigone and Ines de Castro for Shakespeare Carolina, as well as leading roles in Measure for Measure and The Tempest. Katie leads a cast of 16 playing over 40 characters.
